The Lietuvos Respublikos liberalų sąjūdis ( LRLS , German: Liberal Movement of the Republic of Lithuania ) is a liberal political party in Lithuania .

history

LRLS was created on October 20, 2005 from the split of the parliamentary group of the Liberal Movement from the parliamentary group of the Liberal and Center Union (LiCS). On February 25, 2006 , the LRLS party was founded. The party's chairman was initially Petras Auštrevičius , Lithuania's chief negotiator in EU accession negotiations from 2001 to 2002 . The former leader of the Liberal Union and one of the two Liberals at the time in the European Parliament , Eugenijus Gentvilas , also switched to the new party .

The party came into being when half of the LiCS MPs were unable to assert themselves by demanding that their chairman, Artūras Zuokas , who was burdened by corruption allegations, resign . It can be classified as a right-wing liberal party, which finds its electorate mainly among the well-educated city dwellers of the younger generation. Many of the high-ranking party representatives are also only around 40 years old.

In the local elections in February 2007, the first election it faced, the party came in 10th nationwide with 4.7% of the vote, albeit very differently locally. In the capital Vilnius it came to 4 out of 51 mandates, in the country's second largest city, Kaunas , to 4 out of 41 and in the port city of Klaipėda to 5 out of 31 mandates.

In February 2008 Eligijus Masiulis became the new party leader. In the parliamentary elections in Lithuania in 2008 it became the sixth strongest party with 5.7% of the vote. She moved into the Lithuanian parliament , the Seimas , with 11 members . 6 of them won their constituencies directly. It took part in the center-right government under the leadership of the conservatives and is again forming a coalition with the LiCS. The LRLS has three ministers in the government of Prime Minister Andrius Kubilius: Transport Minister Eligijus Masiulis, Education and Science Minister Gintaras Steponavičius and Justice Minister Remigijus Šimašius .

In the European elections in 2009 , the LRLS received 7.4% of the valid votes and obtained 1 mandate. It was able to leave the LiCS well behind (only 3.5% of the votes). Member of the European Parliament as a representative of the LRLS was Leonidas Donskis Professor of Philosophy and Political Science from 2009 to 2014 . In the 2014 European elections , the LRLS received 16.52% of the valid votes. The representatives in the European Parliament since 2014 are Petras Auštrevičius and entrepreneur Antanas Guoga .

Since April 2011 Rimantas Mikaitis (member of LRLS) has been the mayor of Kaunas , the second largest city in Lithuania.
