Leonidas Donskis

Leonidas Donskis (born August 13, 1962 in Klaipėda , † September 21, 2016 in Vilnius ) was a Lithuanian philosopher, essayist , professor and liberal politician (EP member).

Life

After graduating from secondary school, Donskis graduated from the Klaipėda Faculty of the Lithuanian Music and Drama Academy in 1985 with a degree in Lithuanian Philology and Drama Education, and in 1987 he studied philosophy at Vilnius University . In 1990 he received his PhD in philosophy .

Donskis worked as a professor of the Philosophical Faculty and Senior Fellow of the Center of Emigration Studies at the Vytautas Magnus University (VDU) in Kaunas . He has also taught as a lecturer in social and moral philosophy at the University of Helsinki and as a visiting professor of cultural theory at the Estonian Institute for Human Rights in Tallinn . As director, he headed the Institute for Diplomacy and Political Science of the VDU in Kaunas.

From 1991 to 1997 Donskis was head of the Department of Philosophy at Klaipėda University . Until 2009 he was the presenter of the program “Be pykčio” on Lietuvos televizija (LRT). Since September 2014 he has been Vice Rector of Science at the ISM University of Management and Economics . There he taught leadership: power-actualization .

His main interests lay among other things in the philosophy of history, culture, literature, moral philosophy, social sciences and the history of ideas in Central and Eastern European thinking.

Donskis was deputy chairman of the Jewish community of Lithuania and honorary consul of Finland in Kaunas.

Donskis died on September 21, 2016 after a collapse at Vilnius Airport .

From 2009 to 2014 Donskis was a member of the European Parliament and represented the Lietuvos Respublikos liberalų sąjūdis party for Lithuania . In this capacity Donskis was a member of the board of the Group of the Alliance of Liberals and Democrats for Europe . As a member, he was active in the following committees and delegations: Development Committee , Subcommittee on Human Rights , Delegation in the committees for parliamentary cooperation EU-Armenia, EU-Azerbaijan and EU-Georgia and in the delegation to the Euronest Parliamentary Assembly .
