Remigijus Šimašius (born January 12, 1974 in Tauragė ) is a Lithuanian liberal politician . He has been the mayor of Vilnius since 2015, and since 2016 national chairman of the liberal party Lietuvos Respublikos liberalų sąjūdis . From 2008 to 2012 he was Minister of Justice of Lithuania.

Life

After graduating from secondary school, Remigijus Šimašius graduated from the Law Faculty of Vilnius University with a degree in law . He then studied as a doctoral student at the LTU University in Vilnius and received his doctorate in law on September 17, 2002 on the subject of “legal pluralism ” (supervisor Prof. Viktoras Justickis ). Thereafter, Šimašius worked as a professor of legal theory at LTU University and later at the chair of legal theory and legal history at the Vilnius University Faculty of Law. Remigijus Šimašius was a legal expert and economist, and from May 9, 2006 to December 2008, President of the Lithuanian Free Market Institute .

From 2001 to 2006, Šimašius was a member of the Vilnius City Council . On December 9, 2008 Remigijus Šimašius became the second youngest Minister of Justice in the history of Lithuania. He held this office until December 13, 2012. From November 2012 to April 2015, Šimašius was a member of the Seimas . On April 22, 2015, he became mayor of Vilnius Municipality after beating incumbent Artūras Zuokas from the Lietuvos laisvės sąjunga party in the elections . Šimašius was traded as a possible candidate for the 2019 presidential election in Lithuania . In 2019 local elections in Lithuania , he won a relative majority with the group of voters he founded .

From 1995 to 2005, Šimašius was a member of Lietuvos liberalų sąjunga (LLS), and from 1998 to 1999 a member of the LLS board. Now he is a member of the LLS successor party Lietuvos Respublikos liberalų sąjūdis . In June 2016 he was elected party chairman by their general assembly.

Šimašius is married to Agnė Matulaitė, a psychologist and psychotherapist specializing in body psychotherapy , in his second marriage . He has three children with her (daughters Una and Morta Teresė and son Anupras Patrikas).
