City history
Archaeologists date the oldest finds in the area of today's Vilnius to pre-Christian times. According to their excavations, the area of the city was already settled in the Stone Age Magdalenian. Other sites in the urban area have been dated to the 4th millennium and the 2nd century BC. In the early Middle Ages, this tactically advantageous place was first settled by Balts, later Slavs and, from the 11th century, Jews too. As early as the 10th century, a wooden fortification was built in what is now the city, around which a settlement was built. Vilnius was first mentioned in historical sources as the capital of the Lithuanians in 1323.
