Petras Auštrevičius

Petras Auštrevičius (born May 16, 1963 in Juodšiliai , district of Vilnius , Lithuanian SSR , Soviet Union ) is a Lithuanian liberal politician , member of the European Parliament , former Deputy Speaker of the Seimas , diplomat .

Life

Auštrevičius studied economics at Vilnius University from 1981 to 1986 . After scientific work at the Academy of Sciences of Lithuania, he worked in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Lithuania . In 1992 a study visit on diplomacy at the Hoover Institute followed. In 1993 he was entrusted with setting up the Lithuanian embassy in Finland , and in 1994 he was appointed ambassador here . In 1998 he became coordinator of the accession negotiations to the EU, in 1999 Lithuanian government chancellor , from 2001 chief negotiator in this matter. He has been a member of the Seimas since 2004 , initially as a member of Liberalų ir centro sąjunga , and from 2005 as chairman of the Lietuvos Respublikos liberalų sąjūdis, which was created by the split . In 2008 he was replaced as party chairman by Eligijus Masiulis . In the parliamentary elections in Lithuania in 2008 , the LRLS achieved an unexpected success with 5.72% of the vote. Auštrevičius was not elected as a direct candidate, but came back to the parliament with a place on the list. From 2013 to 2014 he was deputy chairman of the Seimas. He has been a member of the European Parliament since June 2014 .

He is one of the 89 people from the European Union against whom Russia imposed an entry ban in May 2015 .
