The Liberalų ir centro sąjunga ( LiCS , German: Liberale und Zentrumsunion) was a liberal political party in Lithuania . In 2014 it merged with TAIP to form Lietuvos laisvės sąjunga (liberalai) .

history

The party was formed in 2003 through the merger of the parties Lietuvos liberalų sąjunga (LLS), Lietuvos centro sąjunga (LCS) and the Moderniujų krikščionių Demokratieų sąjunga (MKDS). The party was headed by the former mayor of Vilnius , Artūras Zuokas .

In the elections to the European Parliament in June 2004 , the party received 11.2% of the vote and thus had two members of the European Parliament. In the parliamentary elections in October 2004 , Liberalų ir centro sąjunga received 9.1% of the vote and won 18 of the 141 seats (11 of which were direct mandates). An independent MP joined the group. A year later, in October 2005, 9 Seimas MPs left the parliamentary group and founded the group of the Liberal Movement and on February 25, 2006 the Liberal Movement of the Republic of Lithuania (LRLS), angry at the corruption allegations of chairman Zuokas .

Despite this weakening, the LiCS was able to achieve a good result in the local elections in February 2007. It received 11.1% of the vote nationwide and proportionally the same number of mandates (182). So she puts u. a. the mayors of Klaipėda (22% of the vote), Šiauliai and Tauragė . In the capital Vilnius the party achieved 16% of the vote and 9 of the 51 seats, but its party leader Artūras Zuokas was not re-elected as mayor.

In the course of the negotiations after the loss of the government majority in May 2006, the LiCS agreed to take part in a center-left minority government. From July 4, 2006, she put two ministers in the Kirkila's cabinet : Interior Minister Raimondas Šukys (from December 17, 2007 Regimantas Čiupaila ) and Minister of Culture Jonas Jučas .

In the parliamentary elections in Lithuania in 2008 , the LiCS only passed the 5% hurdle (5.3%) by a hair's breadth and received 8 seats (including 3 direct mandates) in the Seimas . An independent joined the LiCS faction. The Center Union once again took part in government, this time a center-right coalition led by the conservative Fatherland League . She placed the ministers for health, Algis Čaplikas , and for home affairs, Raimundas Palaitis , in the cabinet of Andrius Kubilius . Four years later , the LiCS was only able to gain 2.1% of the votes and left parliament.

The Liberal and Center Union was a member of the Liberal International and the European Liberal Democratic and Reform Party .
