Eugenijus Gentvilas (born March 14, 1960 in Telšiai ) is a Lithuanian politician , former Prime Minister and member of the European Parliament .

Life

After finishing school, Eugenijus Gentvilas studied geography at Vilnius University from 1978 to 1983 . He then worked as a research assistant at the Academy of Sciences until 1990 . In 1993 he received his doctorate with a dissertation on geomorphology (on the epigenetic effects of glacier advances during the cold ages in what is now Lithuania). Between 1993 and 1996 he was a lecturer at Klaipėda University .

His sister is Virginija Baltraitienė (* 1958), politician, vice-president of parliament, mayor of the Kėdainiai district (2005).

His son is Simonas Gentvilas (* 1984), liberal politician, Seimas member.

Political career

Gentvilas began his political career immediately after the independence of Lithuania on March 11, 1990 with the election as member of the Supreme Council, the provisional parliament of Lithuania ( Seimas ), in which he represented the Liberal Union ( Lietuvos liberalų sąjunga ) and its parliamentary group chairman until 1992 he was also from 1991 to 1992.

In 1995 he became a member of the city council of Klaipėda , where he remained by 2004. During this time he was also chairman of the Liberal Union from 1996 to 1999. In 1997 Gentvilas was elected mayor of Klaipėda. As such, he received the German Working Group of the Memellandkreise in August 1998 for its 50th anniversary . He held the office of mayor until 2001.

On June 15, 2001, he became Minister of Economics in the Rolandas Paksas cabinet . When he resigned five days later, Gentvilas became the incumbent Prime Minister . On July 3, 2001, he was followed by the former President Algirdas Mykolas Brazauskas . He himself was then again chairman of the Liberal Union. After their merger with the Liberal Center Union ( Lietuvos centro sąjunga ) and the Modern Christian Democrats ( Moderniųjų krikščionių Demokratieų sąjunga ) to form the Liberal and Center Union ( Liberalų ir centro sąjunga ) in May 2003, he became its deputy chairman. However, he gave up this office in 2004 in order to run successfully as a member of the European Parliament . Since 2006 he has been a member of the split-off party of the Liberal Movement ( Lietuvos Respublikos liberalų sąjūdis ).

On June 10, 2004 he was elected Member of the European Parliament after Lithuania joined the European Union . As such, he belongs to the Group of the Alliance of Liberals and Democrats for Europe , of which he is also a board member. In 2007 he was awarded the MEP Award 2007 for his work in the Committee for Regional Development.
