Janusz Radziwiłł ( Lithuanian Jonušas Radvila * 12. December 1612 in Papilys ; † 31 December 1655 in Tykocin ) one was Lithuanian aristocrat , magnate , officials in the civil service , military leader and Imperial Prince of the Holy Roman Empire .

As the son of Krzysztof Radziwiłł (1585-1640) and Anna Radziwiłł († after 1642), born Kiszka , he came from the noble family of Radziwiłł (Lithuanian Radvilos ).

Life

Janusz held a variety of state offices in the Aristocratic Republic of Poland-Lithuania , which made him very rich and influential. He was from 1633 Grand Chamberlain of Lithuania, 1646-1653 Generalstarost the Duchy Samogotien , 1646-1654 Feldhetman of Lithuania, from 1653 voivode of Vilnius and from 1654 Hetman of Lithuania . He was also the star of Kamieniec Litewski , Sejny and Kazimierz .

Janusz Radziwiłł was a Calvinist , saw himself as a protector of the Reformed faith and supported the maintenance and construction of Reformed schools and churches in Lithuania. He led the troops in Lithuania and Livonia in 1654 after the outbreak of the Russo-Polish War . After Sweden's attack on Poland , provoked by the Polish king in 1655 , Janusz Radziwiłł tacted between the Swedes who had invaded Livonia and the Russians, whom he considered more dangerous. In 1655, after King John Kasimir fled to the German Empire , he and his cousin Bogusław Radziwiłł dissolved the Lublin Union with Poland in the Treaty of Kėdainiai in favor of an alliance between Lithuania and King Karl X. Gustav of Sweden to expel the Russians from Lithuania. This step brought the reformed Radziwiłłs in public in Poland, especially at court , for all time to the reputation of traitors.

Janusz Radziwiłł died in his fortress Tykocin, which was besieged by the troops of the Tyszowce Confederation . He was succeeded as head of the Reformed branch of the family by Bogusław Radziwiłł.
