Jurijs Žigajevs (born November 14, 1985 in Leningrad ) is a former Latvian football player .

Career

Jurijs Žigajevs, who was born in what was then Leningrad (now known as Saint Petersburg ), began his career in the Latvian city of Ilūkste , at FK Ilūkste . From FK he switched to the other second division club from Ilūkste, the FK Zibens / Zemessardze , during his youth . From the 2002 season he was under contract with FK Riga , where he also made his professional debut in the top Latvian league of Virslīga . At the club from the capital of Latvia, he should be under contract for a total of seven seasons. In summer 2008 he moved to FK Ventspils and won the Latvian championship there . In the Baltic League he was also able to win the title with the team in the 2009/10 final against Sūduva Marijampolė from Lithuania. In the final he came after 65 minutes of play for Ritvars Rugins on the field to convert a penalty safely in extra time, as well as in the subsequent penalty shoot-out. In the first half of 2008 Žigajevs was able to achieve 15 goals in 18 games, after which he moved to the Polish first division club Widzew Łódź during the summer break . After the debut against Arka Gdynia , he played only four more times in the jersey of the Łódź district club from Widzew. As a result, he moved back to Latvia after the 2011/12 season and signed again with FK Ventspils. Here he played until the end of the 2017 season and then went to FK Spartaks Jūrmala for seven months and ended his career there on July 31, 2018.

National team

Jurijs Žigajevs made his debut for the Latvian national football team in 2007 against Iceland , after he was substituted on for Aleksejs Višņakovs . In 2008 Žigajevs took part for the first time with Latvia in the Baltic Cup and was able to win this after two victories against Estonia and Lithuania , where he was only used in the second game. At the Baltic Cup 2010 , the midfielder should play minutes in the two international matches, but could not successfully defend the 2008 title with the selection. He scored the first goal in the national jersey in 2009 when he scored against Luxembourg . His last international match to date was completed by Žigajevs in September 2011 against Greece , before he was used again in February 2013 in a 3-0 draw against Japan in Kobe .
