Arka Gdynia (completely Morski Związkowy Klub Sportowy Arka Gdynia ) is a Polish sports club from the port city of Gdynia ( German Gdynia ) on the Baltic Sea . The club, founded in 1929, celebrated its greatest club success in 1979 and 2017 when it won the Polish Football Cup.
history
The club was founded in 1929 by workers as Klub Sportowy Gdynia . After several mergers with other clubs from Gdynia, the club took on its current name for the first time in 1952 as Klub Sportowy Kolejarz-Arka Gdynia . In the following year, the club made it to the third highest division. In 1960 the promotion to the second division followed, which had to be decided by a coin toss. After that, the club shuttled for a long time between the second and third division, until 1974, for the first time in the club's history, made the leap into the Ekstraklasa . At first, however, you couldn't keep yourself in the league and were relegated straight away.
This was followed by the most successful period of the club, when Arka belonged to the highest Polish league for six years from 1976 to 1982 without interruption. When Arka established themselves in the top Polish league in the late 1970s, they also achieved their first and only title win until 2017. In 1979, Gdynia prevailed in the Cup final in Lublin with 2-1 against Wisła Krakow and qualified for the first time for the European Cup. In the European Cup Winners' Cup , the club failed in the first round after a 3-2 home win and a 0-2 defeat in the second leg against Beroe Stara Sagora .
In 1982 the crash into the second division began, which was even followed two years later by relegation to the third division. In the following years, Arka Gdynia commuted between these two divisions, with the club being predominantly third-rate. Only in 2001 did Gdynia re-establish itself in the second highest football league and in 2005/06 benefited from the increase in Ekstraklasa from 14 to 16 teams. As a result, Gdynia qualified third in the table for the top Polish division this year. This was the renewed promotion after 23 years in the first division of Poland. However, the first division membership lasted only two years and after you could still hold the class in the relegation against Jagiellonia Białystok in 2006 , Arka Gdynia was sentenced to relegation due to the involvement in a corruption scandal. In the 2007/08 season they were able to secure 4th place in the 2nd league and rose again due to further team demotions in the Ekstraklasa. In the 2010/11 season , the club rose again to the second division, in which he played five more years. In the 2015/16 season , the club secured the championship of the second division early and will play in the Ekstraklasa again from the 2016/17 season . This season Arka Gdynia was able to win the Polish Football Cup, where they surprisingly prevailed in the final against the favorite Lech Posen 2: 1 afterwards and thus won the second title in the club's history. In 2017/18 Arka made it to the finals again, but failed there because of Legia Warsaw .
Stadion
The club's home venue is the Miejski stadium in the Redłowo district , which has had a total capacity of 15,139 seats since renovations in 2010. The lower class local rivals Bałtyk Gdynia also play their home games there. The old stadium on the Baltic Sea (Ejsmonda 1) with the "Górka", the main grandstand, was converted into tennis courts. Before that, the club had played its games there for almost 70 years.
