Georg Austrian

Georg Österreicher (* 1563 in Wiebelsheim near Windsheim ; † 1621 in Windsheim ) was a teacher and cantor in Windsheim.

Life

Georg Österreicher studied at the University of Wittenberg from 1585 . After completing his studies, in 1588 he became a collaborator at the Latin School in Windsheim, today's Georg-Wilhelm-Steller-Gymnasium . In 1608 he was appointed cantor in Windsheim. In 1614 he published a catechetical collection of songs, of which only a second, posthumously published edition of 1623 has survived.

Songs

From him is the first source of the first part of the melody of the song Who knows how close my end is to me! ( EG 530), the text of which was written by Aemilie Juliane von Schwarzburg-Rudolstadt .

A really Christian hymn book. First of all, the whole catechism or sermons for children / according to the Princely Brandenburg and Nuremberg Church Order: Sampt the rules of the house seasons / any sermon and rule with a special chant understood / and directed to well-known melodies of the church chant / Afterwards many other beautiful spiritual songs on the usual festival : and holiday / and all sorts of runs / for a Christian community deß H: Reichs instead of Windßheim to court.
