The Pipistrel Virus is an ultralight aircraft made by the Slovenian manufacturer Pipistrel .

history

The development of the virus on the basis of the sister model Sinus began in 1997. The maiden flight took place in 1999, one year later the series production began. In 2002, 2003 and 2004 Ivo Boscarol took part in the Slovenian UL championships with a virus, from which he emerged as the winner.

In 2007 and 2008, a modified variant of the virus won the overall ranking of the NASA challenge . This variant with shortened wings went into series production in 2008 as Virus SW .

construction

Front view

The Virus is a modern two-seater ultralight aircraft in plastic construction, the fuselage of which was taken over from the Sinus . In addition to the standard version with nose wheel landing gear , a version with a tail wheel is also available. The main difference between the shoulder wing and the sister model is the shorter wings: In the standard version, the Virus has a wingspan of 12.64 m, the Virus SW version (“short wing”) has 10.71 m.

The standard engine used is the Rotax 912 UL with 80 HP. The short wing variant is also available with the 100 hp Rotax 912 ULS ( Virus 912 SW 100 )

Versions of Virus and Virus SW that have been adapted to the approval requirements of the US LSA class have existed since 2010 . Since the American regulations exclude a controllable pitch propeller for this class , the angle of attack of the propeller blades is fixed in these versions in motorized flight. When the engine is switched off, the propeller of the standard version automatically moves into the glider position.
