Light Sport Aircraft (LSA) are a new class of aircraft that has existed in various countries since the 2000s. Contrary to the existing regulations for type certification for light aircraft , the certification for the light sport aircraft is easier.

United States of America

The Light Sport Aircraft (LSA) is a new class of aircraft in the United States since 2004 . It includes the following aircraft:

Contrary to the existing regulations for the approval of aircraft, ASTM defines the rules for the LSA class . The rough rules for this class provide for a maximum speed with maximum engine power of 120 kts (222 km / h) and a maximum take-off weight of 1320 lbs (600 kg). Further cornerstones of the class are a piston engine , no pressurized cabin, propellers with a fixed pitch angle, a maximum of two seats and a fixed landing gear.

European Union

The US regulations were largely adopted in 2011 by the European Aviation Safety Agency as part of the standardized certification rules for light aircraft ( European Light Aviation 1 , ELA 1 ), which resulted in the certification standard CS- LSA.

The LSA class in the EU was aimed at giving more powerful models of the ultralight aircraft classes the opportunity to obtain easier approval as light aircraft. In contrast to the USA, however, a self-declaration by the manufacturer to comply with the rules is not sufficient; the manufacturer must receive approval from the aviation authority as a manufacturing company for aircraft.

Although very similar and partly identical to microlight aircraft, LSA is not an aerial sports device, but a light aircraft for which a pilot license and registration is required. The frequent comparison with aerodynamically controlled ultralight aircraft is therefore wrong from a legal point of view, also because the regulations on the approval and use of air sports equipment in Europe are nationally regulated and not standardized.

The light sport aircraft are kg in Australia aircraft with a Höchstablufgewicht of 600 in landplanes 650 kg for seaplanes and 560 kg for aircraft such as free balloon or airship . It includes the following aircraft:
