ASTM International
The ASTM International (originally American Society for Testing and Materials ) is an international standards organization based in West Conshohocken , Pennsylvania , USA . It publishes technical standards for goods and services.
ASTM was founded in 1898 by a group of scientists and engineers led by Charles Benjamin Dudley (1842–1909), who was particularly committed to measures against the frequent rail breaks on the railways of his time. The group developed a standard for the steel grade to be used.
In 2005 there were more than 12,000 ASTM standards. The focus of the work lies in the development of standardized test and analysis procedures. The Annual Book of ASTM Standards now comprises 81 volumes. The membership consists of manufacturers, users, governments and academics from more than 100 countries. Therefore the company was renamed ASTM International in 2001 .
The use of ASTM standards is voluntary except in the US publicly funded area. In Germany, ASTM standards are used, for example, in the field of fracture mechanics .
