IHS Markit is a publicly traded company headquartered in London that provides data and information services to a variety of industries including the automotive , energy , financial services , defense and shipping industries .

Business activity

IHS compiles information on the topics of energy, product life cycles , economy, environment and safety. Associated brands include Jane's Information Group , Cambridge Energy Research Associates (CERA), and business information services John S. Herold, Inc. and Global Insight . The subsidiary iSuppli is active in market research in the entertainment electronics sector, among other things.

In its Standards Store, IHS Markit sells content from over 500 different standardization organizations and book publishers in printed and digital form, including standards such as ASTM International (ASTM) and the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) .

In the shipping sector, the division carries Maritime & Trade one on the Lloyd's Register of Ships declining database of over 200,000 ships and by the International Maritime Organization mandated IMO numbers to allocate for new buildings.

history

Richard O'Brien founded Information Handling Services (IHS) in 1959 as a provider of microfilm product catalogs to the aerospace industry.

In 1997, IHS acquired the British Engineering Sciences Data Unit (ESDU), adding a knowledge database for various engineering disciplines .

Since 2004, the company has officially traded under the short form IHS , and on November 11, 2015, it went public as IHS Inc. on the New York Stock Exchange .

In 2007 IHS had approximately $ 688 million in sales. For 2009 the company reported sales of $ 967 million. In 2012 sales were $ 1.5 billion.

On March 22, 2016, IHS announced that it wanted to merge with its British competitor Markit . The new company IHS Markit is said to be based in London and 57 percent of which will be held by IHS shareholders. The company was initially led by IHS CEO Jerre Stead, who was replaced by Markit CEO Lance Uggla at the end of 2017.
