The 1897 Boston Marathon was the 1st edition of the annual running event in Boston , United States . The marathon took place on April 19, 1897. A total of 15 runners took part in the first edition, in which the running distance was 38.51 kilometers.

It was won by John J. McDermott in 2:55:10 h.
