First, the American Rosie Ruiz was the winner with a course record of 2: 31.56. She was disqualified after significant doubts arose that she had completed the entire run. She had qualified for the competition at the New York City Marathon in 1979 , in which a witness later stated that she had ridden the subway with Ruiz during the run.
