Manuela Schär (born December 5, 1984 ) is a Swiss wheelchair athlete . She is active in the starting class T54 , both in sprint competitions and in long-distance races.

Life

Manuela Schär grew up in Altishofen with her parents and her three years older brother Ivo in a familiar residential area. She completed kindergarten and primary school in Altishofen, and attended secondary school in the neighboring village of Nebikon . When she was nine, she had a serious accident on a friend's birthday party. The swing she was playing on was not properly anchored in the ground, causing her to collapse over her and seriously injuring her back.

Already active in a track and field club, during their Ersthabilitation in learned archipelago Swiss Paraplegic Center in Nottwil the Rohlstuhlsport know. In addition to sport, she began an apprenticeship as a commercial clerk after finishing school. While she was still in training, Schär took part in the 2004 Paralympic Games in Athens and won silver over 200 and bronze over 100 meters. At the Paralympic Games in Beijing in 2008 , Schär won bronze over 200 meters. Schär then changed her trainer and expanded her program to include the 800 meter route. Nevertheless, she remained without a podium at the 2012 Paralympic Games in London and fell into a form low. Based on experience, Schär changed her trainer again and from then on concentrated more on the long distances from 1500 meters to marathons. In her first long distance season she became world champion over the marathon distance at the World Para Athletics Championships in Lyon 2013 and won the silver medal over 800 and 5000 meters. Since then she has won all marathons of the World Marathon Majors at least once and also holds the women's world record of 1:35:42, which she set at the Oita Marathon 2019.

She came first in the 2017/18 World Marathon Majors season. In the 2018/19 season she won all races and was honored with a special gold medal after her victory at the Berlin Marathon 2019 . In 2019 she broke the world record over 10,000 meters in July with 21:28, and in August the world record over 800 meters in 1: 41.47. Since Schär already achieved a quota for the Paralympics 2020 in Tokyo at the Marathon World Championships in spring , she put the focus on the marathon series in her planning at the end of the 2019 season and decided not to participate in the World Championships in Dubai .

In 2019 Manuela Schär was voted Swiss Paralympic Sportswoman of the Year at the Sports Awards .
