Disabled sports
Disabled sport refers to the sport practiced by people with disabilities.
A distinction can be made between popular sport and competitive sport . Disabled sports also play an important role in the rehabilitation of people with disabilities.
Competitive and competitive sports
In competitive and competitive sports, different classes used to be differentiated according to the type of handicap, today a distinction is made according to the functional impact of the athletes involved.
Similar to the Olympic Games, there are the Paralympic Games for athletes with physical disabilities , which take place after the Olympic Games. The Paralympic participants are usually housed in the same accommodations as the Olympians, and the competitions are also held in the same venues. Deaf people can compete in the Deaflympics , mentally handicapped athletes in the Special Olympics . There are also the World Transplant Games for organ transplants . The International Paralympic Committee also organizes various world championships .
organization
In Germany, disabled athletes are organized as members of their respective (disabled) sports clubs in the German Disabled Sports Association (DBS). The DBS consists of 17 state sports associations for the disabled , the two professional associations, the German Wheelchair Sports Association (DRS) and the German Sports Association for the Hard of Hearing, and a further seven extraordinary member organizations. In Austria there is the Austrian Disabled Sports Association , in Switzerland the Swiss Paraplegic Association with Wheelchair Sports Switzerland and Plusport Disabled Sports Switzerland . Whether and to what extent the separate organization in the disabled sports associations corresponds to the UN resolution on inclusion is controversial. For example, Norway dissolved the national disabled sports association in 2002 and carried out an integration of sport to sport and had good experiences with it (at least in Norway's major sports such as cross-country skiing).
Others
In 1978 the German President donated the silver medal for disabled sports, which was awarded to successful disabled athletes until 1993. Since 1993, the silver bay leaf has also been awarded to disabled athletes . The Lower Saxony Institute for Sports History (NISH) in Hanover has the largest collection on the history of disabled sports .
