The silver medal for disabled sports was a state decoration of the Federal Republic of Germany . It was awarded to disabled athletes who have demonstrated their ability to cope with their disabilities in an outstanding manner through special athletic achievements and thereby set an example for others.

The silver medal was donated on April 13, 1978 by the then Federal President Walter Scheel in order to meet the wishes of disabled sports and to visibly highlight sports as a means of rehabilitation for disabled people. The awards ended in 1993. From this point in time, disabled athletes (in equation with non-disabled athletes) will be honored with the silver bay leaf for their athletic achievements.

Appearance, texture and way of wearing

The badge of honor is a silver medal that shows the federal eagle in the middle on its obverse , which is surrounded by a laurel wreath also held in silver . The back bears the inscription DER BUNDESPRÄSIDENT in the middle. The day of the award was engraved underneath. The badge of honor is (still) worn on a ribbon with the colors of the Olympic rings (blue-yellow-black-green-red). An exchange for the silver bay leaf was not compulsory. The ribbon buckle shows a miniature applied to the front of the badge in the middle.

Award

The following conditions apply to the award of the silver medal. Accordingly, the medal could be awarded to:

  • Members of teams who had won 1st place (gold medal) out of at least six teams in international competitions recognized and advertised by the relevant international disabled sports organizations (e.g. World Championships, Olympic Games for the Disabled, World Games).
  • Members of teams who have won a German championship title several times with the same line-up.
  • Disabled athletes who had won 1st place (gold medal) in international competitions. In principle, only those athletes were considered who had also become winners in a competition with at least six participants.
  • Disabled athletes who have won 1st place several times at German championships and have shown outstanding performance.
  • Disabled athletes who had set a world record for disabled people at official events according to the rules of the international disabled sports federations (extraordinary one-off performance).
  • Disabled athletes who had achieved outstanding performance in competitions with non-disabled athletes (final ranking at international or national championships, inclusion in the list of the best) and
  • In special exceptional cases, also disabled athletes who have repeatedly won 2nd place (silver medal) or 3rd place (bronze medal) in international competitions. However, the number of participants in the respective disciplines had to be taken into account.

The proposals which should lead to the award of the medal had to be forwarded by the sports associations to the head of the office of the Federal President or the Federal Minister of the Interior . Organizations that also looked after the field of disabled sports but did not belong to the German Sports Association could also submit proposals, but only after prior consultation with the President of the German Sports Association.

The recipient of the award received an award certificate with the handover of the medal, which became his property.
