Marathon (sport)
Marathon is generally called long-distance competitions in various sports .
The term refers to the historic Battle of Marathon , the legend of the marathon runner who brought the news of victory to Sparta, and the related run over a distance of 42.195 kilometers today.
Marathon distances - also in other lengths, or with a corresponding time of around 2-3 hours - can be found:
- Marathon running , track and field competition; as well as ultramarathons and long-distance runs
- Cycling marathon (road)
- Mountain bike marathon
- Canoe marathon , discipline of canoeing
- Ice marathon , discipline of speed skating
- Inline marathon , discipline in inline sports
- Rowing marathon , discipline of rowing
- Ski marathon , discipline of skiing
- Slide marathon , discipline of distance slide sport
- Off-road driving , in equestrian sport with a carriage (unofficial name)
The term is also used for particularly long events, for example as a messier marathon in amateur astronomy, or - as a suitcase word with the last syllable - as a hackathon or editathon in the IT sector.
