Ocean Shield 2019 ( Russian Океанский щит-2019 ) was a military maneuver by the Russian Navy that took place in the Baltic Sea from August 1 to 9, 2019 . It was the largest naval maneuver in the Baltic Sea since the end of the Cold War . The exercise was led by Nikolai Yevmenov , Commander in Chief of the Navy since May 2019 .

69 ships and boats as well as 58 aircraft of the navy and the air force took part in the maneuver . More than 10,000 soldiers were involved. According to Russian information, the defense against conventional air strikes and landing operations were practiced. The guided missile cruiser Marshal Ustinov , the destroyer Severomorsk, the nuclear submarine Smolensk and Bujan-class corvettes were used for this purpose .

The starting point for many of the participating units was Navy Day , which was celebrated on July 28 in Saint Petersburg . During the exercise, Russian units relocated past Rügen and Fehmarn far into the western Baltic Sea to the Great Belt . At times Russian ships cruised off the Bay of Kiel and in Danish waters. The maneuver was probably first observed by the German reconnaissance ship Oste , before Danish and Swedish units escorted the Russian ships.

Most recently, NATO held a major maneuver with 55 ships and 8,600 soldiers in the Baltic Sea in June, which took place as part of the annual BALTOPS exercise .
