Marshal Ustinov
The Marshal Ustinov ( Russian Маршал Устинов ) is a guided missile cruiser the Slava-class cruiser in the Russian Navy .
The ship, named after the Soviet Marshal Dmitri Ustinov , was laid down in 1978, launched on February 25, 1982 and was assigned to the Northern Fleet on November 5, 1986 . In 1989 the cruiser called at the port of Norfolk , making it the first ship in the Soviet fleet to visit an American naval base during the Cold War . In 2011 the cruiser was supposed to be assigned to the Pacific Fleet, but was laid up for an overhaul in Severodvinsk on the White Sea for a long time .
On August 24, 2016, the modernized cruiser was put back into service with the Northern Fleet. The reason for the almost five-year delay was the need to re-produce all construction plans (the original plans of the shipyard in Mykolaiv could not be accessed due to the Crimean crisis ) and the need to re-produce various machine tools. During the renovation, the fuselage and machine were overhauled and all analog sensors and ECM systems were replaced by the latest digital systems. The Russian Navy hopes that the experience gained by the converted shipyard will lead to a significant acceleration of the planned modernization of its sister ships Moskva and Varyag .
At the beginning of September 2018, Marshal Ustinov took part in joint exercises with ships of the Northern Fleet, the Black Sea Fleet , the Baltic Fleet and the Caspian Flotilla, as well as with the air forces in the Eastern Mediterranean .
