James Caine (* 1872 in Manchester ; † 1940 there ) was an English football player .

Career

Caine played from March 1892 for the Manchester-based second division AFC Ardwick . His only competitive appearance in the first team had the otherwise used in the reserve team Caine in October 1893, when he represented Harry Middleton on the right runner position in a 3-2 home win against Newcastle United . In September 1894 he moved to local and league rivals Newton Heath . Even for Newton Heath, he only came to a competitive game in the first team. During an injury misery on Easter 1895, he formed the defender pair with John Dow instead of Fred Erentz in a 2-1 defeat at the designated season champions FC Bury . In the reserve team playing in the Lancashire Combination , he came to some missions as a defender and helped out several times as a goalkeeper in December 1894. He must have impressed the club's officials, in March 1897 he rose to the position of goalkeeper to professional, in May 1898 he was in a friendly game of the first team against Gainsborough Trinity between the posts. The 1898/99 season he played as a goalkeeper of the reserve team before he left the club in January 1899. He then possibly played for local clubs Tonge and Hyde .
