Dave McKenzie (marathon runner)

Dave McKenzie (actually David Closs McKenzie ; born March 16, 1943 in Dunollie , Gray District ) is a retired New Zealand marathon runner .

In 1964 he won the Great Western Marathon in Greymouth in 2:24:26 h. The following year he was champion of Canterbury in 2:22:32 h and won again at the Great Western Marathon. In 1966 he defended his Canterbury title and improved to 2:17:22 h. Shortly thereafter, he became New Zealand champion in the national record time of 2:16:59, and at the end of the year he won the Great Western Marathon for the third time .

In 1967 he was again Canterbury and New Zealand champions (with 2:16:02 h and 2:21:50 h) and won the Boston Marathon in 2:15:45 h. At the end of the year he was third in the Fukuoka Marathon behind Derek Clayton , who with 2:09:37 h was the first person to stay under 2:10 hours. McKenzie's time of 2:12:26 h was the fifth fastest marathon time at the time. He took back the national record from Mike Ryan and held it until 1970 when he lost it to Jack Foster .

In 1968 Dave McKenzie was again Canterbury Champion and came in 37th place at the Olympic Games in Mexico City . In 1970 and 1971 he was again Canterbury champions, 1971 and 1972 New Zealand champions. At the 1972 Olympic Games in Munich, he finished 22nd.
