Edith Wolf-Hunkeler (born July 30, 1972 in Altishofen ) is a Swiss athlete . The wheelchair athlete drives medium and long distances as well as the marathon route .

Life

The trained commercial clerk has been paraplegic since a serious car accident in Zofingen in February 1994 . After her rehabilitation , she traveled to the United States for five months to study English. In Florida , she got to know disabled sports and began to play intensively herself.

Although she was able to qualify for the Paralympics in Sydney 2000 , she was unable to take part in the Berlin Marathon due to a serious fall .

Wolf-Hunkeler has had a daughter since September 14, 2010 and married Mark Wolf in August 2011. The family lives in Dagmersellen .

Sporting successes

Edith Wolf-Hunkeler is multiple European champion in various disciplines. Her most successful competitions so far were at the European Athletics Championships in Assen in 2003, where she won the gold medal over 400 m, 800 m, 1500 m, 5000 m and the marathon course.

She won the Women's Wheelchair Division of the New York City Marathon in 2004, 2005, 2007, 2008, and 2009. She was honored by the New York Road Runners on November 1, 2018 during TCS New York City Marathon Race Week.

Television appearances

Wolf-Hunkeler moderated the Miss Switzerland election in 2001 together with Beni Thurnheer , and in June 2013 she was on the jury for the election. In November 2013, she stood in front of the camera for a week as a guest presenter on the show glanz & gloria .

Honors

Edith Wolf-Hunkeler was voted Swiss Disabled Athlete of the Year seven times (2001, 2002, 2003, 2005, 2006, 2007, 2012) for her achievements .
