Johnny Miles

Johnny Miles (actually John Christopher Miles; born October 30, 1905 in Halifax , West Yorkshire , † June 15, 2003 in Hamilton , Ontario ) was a Canadian marathon runner of British origin.

His family emigrated when he was a child and settled in Sydney Mines ( Nova Scotia down). He started running at the age of 16 .

In 1926 he won the Boston Marathon , although he had never competed in a race over ten miles (16.1 km) before. He needed 2:25:41 hours for the 40 km long route and was four minutes ahead of Olympic champion Albin Stenroos . In 1927 he was Canadian champion in 2:40:30 h. At the Olympic Games in Amsterdam in 1928 he came in 17th place in 2:43:32 h.

In 1929 he won again in Boston with his personal best of 2:33:08 h and a marathon in Hamilton in 2:46:25 h. At the British Empire Games in Hamilton in 1930 , he won bronze in 2:48:23 h.

In 1931 he was tenth in Boston, third in the Polytechnic Marathon and second in the Hamilton Marathon. At the 1932 Olympic Games in Los Angeles, he came in 14th place.

In 1925 he was Canadian champion over five miles, in 1928 over six miles.

Johnny Miles was with International Harvester for 43 years . He was inducted into the Nova Scotia Sports Hall of Fame in 1964 and the Hall of Fame of Canadian Sports in 1967. The Johnny Miles Marathon has been held in New Glasgow in his honor since 1975 . In 1983 he was awarded the Order of Canada .
