Morio Shigematsu

Morio Shigematsu ( Japanese 重 松 森 雄 , Shigematsu Morio ; born June 21, 1940 ) is a former Japanese marathon runner .

In 1962 he finished 15th in the Fukuoka Marathon on his debut . The following year he won the Nobeoka Marathon and came second in the Mainichi Marathon .

In 1964 he was sixth in the Beppu-Ōita marathon . In fifth place in the Mainichi Marathon, he missed qualifying for the Olympic Games in Tokyo . At the end of the season he was fifth in Fukuoka.

In 1965, after finishing fourth at the Beppu-Ōita Marathon, he achieved his two greatest successes: at the Boston Marathon he set a course record with 2:16:33 hours, and in the Polytechnic Marathon he triumphed with the world best time of 2:12:00 H. The following season he was ninth in the Beppu-Ōita Marathon, won the Hokkai Times Marathon and won silver at the Asian Games in 1966 in Bangkok.

After a 19th place in Fukuoka in 1967, he last stayed under 2:20 h in 1968 with a tenth place in the Beppu-Ōita marathon (2:17:46) and a fourth place in the Mainichi marathon, which is now a Lake Biwa marathon (2:17:15). In the summer he won the Hokkai Times Marathon again, and in 1969 he was ninth in the Beppu-Ōita Marathon.

After his playing career, he became a coach .
