The International Year of Women was declared by the UN General Assembly for 1975. This year, the United Nations held a celebration for the first time on International Women's Day on March 8th. From June 19 to July 2, 1975, the first UN World Conference on Women was held in Mexico City . The International Year of Women was followed by the UN Decade of Women in 1976–1985 .

A stylized dove with a Venus symbol and an equal sign was chosen as the emblem . It was designed by the then 27-year-old New York graphic artist Valerie Pettis .

Course in Germany

In the Federal Republic of Germany the “Kuratorium Internationales Jahr der Frau” was founded, which held its first meeting on November 19, 1974 in Bonn-Bad Godesberg. It began with the welcome and a speech by the Federal Minister for Youth, Family and Health Katharina Focke . On January 30, 1975, a government declaration by Katharina Focke followed in the German Bundestag . On February 16, 1976, the final event of the Board of Trustees was in Bonn.

The patron was the President of the Bundestag Annemarie Renger . 33 institutions took part in the official events, including a. the parties, trade unions (DGB), churches, ARD, ZDF, women's associations and social associations. The whole year was accompanied by seminars, television and radio broadcasts as well as numerous public events.

Course in Iceland

In Iceland , on the occasion of the “International Year of Women,” about 90% of all women residents stopped work on October 24, bringing the entire country to a standstill. It was the first women's strike in recent history; others followed in Switzerland in 1991.
