UN Decade of Women

The UN Decade of Women , one of the United Nations proclaimed (UN) International Decade , included the decade from 1976 to 1985. The year before (1975) was of the United Nations General Assembly as the International Year of the Woman was proclaimed. The success of this year led the UN to decide to reserve the following ten years for this topic.

In the first year of its existence, the UN established a commission that ensured that the Universal Declaration of Human Rights was drafted in gender-neutral language. After the international women's movement gained in importance in the course of the 1970s, the General Assembly proclaimed 1975 the International Year of Women and in that year organized the first UN World Conference on Women in Mexico City to focus on equality, development and peace were discussed. The conference adopted a world plan of action aimed at improving the status of women. This plan was adopted by the General Assembly. In addition, at the urging of the conference, it declared 1976 to 1985 the UN Decade of Women.

Actions by the UN in the UN Decade of Women

The United Nations Development Fund for Women was founded as early as the first World Conference on Women, the aim of which was to offer financial and technical support for innovation programs, for realizing women-specific human rights issues and for realizing political equality and economic equal opportunities.

In 1979, the General Assembly adopted the Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination against Women in order to uphold the political, economic, social, cultural and civil rights of women. The 30 articles of the convention set out an agenda for national action to end discrimination against women.

A year later, the UN Mid-Decade World Conference on Women took place in Copenhagen as the second UN World Conference on Women. More than 1300 delegates from 145 countries took part. This concerned the implementation of the resolutions and action plans adopted at the 1st World Conference on Women . An NGO forum was held at the same time as the official conference .

At the end of the UN Decade of Women, the third UN World Conference on Women was held in Nairobi in 1985 , attended by 1,400 delegates from a total of 157 countries. With the Forward-Looking Strategies , an action plan for the implementation of the resolutions of the first two World Conference on Women by the year 2000 was adopted.
