United Nations Development Fund for Women

The United Nations Development Fund for Women ( French Fonds de développement des Nations Unies pour la femme, UNIFEM , English United Nations Development Fund for Women ; Spanish Fondo de Desarrollo de las Naciones Unidas para la Mujer ) was a special organ of the United Nations (UN) . It was founded in 1976 with the aim of offering financial and technical support for innovation programs, the realization of human rights issues specific to women , the realization of political equality and economic equality . Within the UN, UNIFEM ensured that all projects were also evaluated from a gender perspective. In January 2011, UNIFEM was merged into the newly founded organization UN Women .

The predecessor organization Voluntary Fund for the UN Women's Decade was founded in 1976 on the initiative of Helvi Sipilä in response to the demands of women's organizations in the context of the first UN World Conference on Women in Mexico City (1975). It was present in over 100 countries.
