Sophie R. von Saldern (born March 30, 1973 in Göttingen ) is a former German basketball player . She is 1.85 meters tall and played on the wing position. She began her career in 1985 in Göttingen and played a total of 106 times for the German national team from 1993 to 2004 . She was the first German player to be selected in the WNBA draft ( 2000 by the Cleveland Rockers ), but was never used in the best American women's basketball league.
After ending her active basketball career in 2007, the trained economist and industrial psychologist began her professional career. She currently works as the head of personnel development in the industry. She remained connected to sport through various voluntary activities. Among other things, she is involved in the Sports Association for Organ Donation (VSO), is an ambassador for the Sports Foundation NRW and supports the Basketball Aid association , which helps children with cancer. She has been married to actor Lars von Saldern since 2008 .
Player career
Sophie von Saldern began her basketball career at the age of twelve with BG 74 Göttingen . After graduating from high school, she went to the University of California at Berkeley, where she played for a year in the NCAA ( Pac 10 ). She then returned to Germany, where she made her first division debut at WEMEX Berlin in Berlin. In 1996, von Saldern made a one-season detour to Australia and played for the Brisbane Blazers.
In 1997 she moved to BTV Wuppertal , with whom she became German champion five times and cup winner five times. Also in 1997 she won the bronze medal with the German national team at the European Championships in Hungary. In the WNBA Draft 2000 she was selected in the fourth round by the Cleveland Rockers , but was never used. After the financial end of BTV Wuppertal, she moved to Italy to Delta Basket Alessandria in 2002.
The year 2003 led her to the Spanish first division club CB Puig d'en Valls Santa Eulàlia in Ibiza . Von Saldern scored an average of 11 points in 26 appearances in the Spanish league. Back in Germany she played for BG Dorsten for a year. Haunted by bad luck with injuries, she ended her national team career and concentrated increasingly on her professional career.
Her last two seasons as a player she completed from 2005 to 2007 in the squad of New Basket '92 Oberhausen . She remained connected to this association and was temporarily responsible for public relations as a board member of NBO.
