Martti Ragnar

The Martti Ragnar (before 1934 Nordsjernen) was a cargo steamer from Finland .

It was measured with 2,262 GRT and was 89 m long, 12.70 m wide and a draft of 6.10 m.

It belonged to the shipping company Nordström share Bolag R., & Co. OY in Lovisa . The ship was built in 1903 in Denmark at the shipyard Helsingør Jernskibs & Maskinbyggeri Share Selskab in Helsingør .

The Martti Ragnar sank on September 23, 1939 at 2.14 a.m. after the ignition of three explosive cartridges , which had been installed by a prize squad of U 4 ( Kapitänleutnant Harro von Klot-Heydenfeldt), in the North Sea 5 nautical miles south of Arendal in Norway in the naval plan square AN 3393.

The crew of 24 men were towed up to eight nautical miles off the Norwegian coast in two lifeboats . The ship was loaded with cellulose , sulfur and pulp and was on its way to Ellesmere Port .
