Galatasaray Istanbul (women's basketball)
The women's basketball team from Galatasaray Istanbul plays in the Turkish Women's Basketball League (1st division, officially Bilyoner.com Türkiye Kadınlar Basketbol Süper Ligi) and is the record champion there. The home games are played in the Abdi İpekçi Arena , which has a capacity of 12,500 spectators.
Just like the men's department , the women of Galatasaray are the only Turkish team to have European title wins ( Euroleague , Eurocup ).
history
In 1954 the department of the association was founded. She is one of the main forces in Turkish and European women's basketball. Since the 1968/87 season Galatasaray, whose basketball clubs are nicknamed Yenilmez Armada ("invincible Armada") and Sarayın Sultanları ("palace sultans", pun with the name component saray , "seraglio" or "palace"), participants in the first division. The championship title was achieved in the following season. Starting in 1989, they won the championship title for nine years in a row and remained unbeaten for seven seasons in a row, a record that has not been achieved to this day. In addition, from 1992 to 1998 both the cup and the presidential cup were won. In Europe, Gala drew attention to itself in the 1998/99 season with third place in the Final Four of the EuroLeauge Women, an unprecedented European success for a Turkish team. The most famous and successful basketball players in Turkey so far come from this time, such as Derya Taşçı Özyer or Çelen Kılınç Memnun.
Despite all these successes, the club was relegated in 2005. In the second division, however, the women were successful and rose again undefeated. In 2008 the team reached the semi-finals of the Eurocup Women and a year later they won the title at the Bosporus . In the same season, a five-year triumph in the Turkish Cup began and the Presidential Cup was won twice.
The 2013/14 season, in which one took up as Galatasaray Odeabank , is considered to be the most successful in the history of the women's basketball team in Galatasaray. Gala won the triple (League, Cup and Euroleague Women). All final victories were won by the women against arch rivals Fenerbahce . This success is still a unique selling point of the association in Turkey. The following season, Galatasaray was able to defend the championship and call itself the best Turkish women's basketball team for the 13th time.
