Brittney Yevette Griner (born October 18, 1990 in Houston , Texas , United States ) is an American basketball player who has been part of the Phoenix Mercury ( Women's National Basketball Association ) squad since 2013 . The 2.03 meter tall griner is mainly used on the position of the center .

life and career

college

Between 2009 and 2013, Griner played at Baylor University . During her four seasons she averaged 22.2 points, 8.8 rebounds and 5 blocks per game. With 3,283 points, she scored the second-most points in her college career and won the award for best defender of the Big 12 in all seasons .

Phoenix Mercury

At the 2013 WNBA Draft , Griner was selected first by the Phoenix Mercury . In her WNBA debut against the Chicago Sky , Griner already set a new record : She was the first player in the league to score two dunkings in a single game . Overall, however, in her first year as a professional player, she did not quite live up to the high expectations placed on her.

With eleven blocks, Griner set a new league record on June 29, 2014 in a game against the Tulsa Shock . At the end of the 2014 season , she was named Defensive Player of the Year and won the WNBA championship with the Mercury.

Brittney Griner is an openly lesbian . More recently, she has also commented on her sexual orientation in the US media public . Regarding this step, she said: "If I can show that I am out and feel good about it and everything is okay, then hopefully a younger generation will be able to feel that way too." From May 2015 to June 2016, Griner was married to Glory Johnson , who also plays in the WNBA.
