Manuela Kay (born April 2, 1964 in Berlin-Neukölln ) is a German journalist , author and publisher .

Life

Manuela Kay worked from the first day of existence (1987) to 1991 as an editor and presenter at the first Berlin private broadcaster Radio 100 , including for the gay and lesbian radio program Eldoradio . She is a co-author and film producer of various video films on the subject of lesbian sexuality and feminist pornography .

In 1992 and 1994 she released the films Du Darfst and Airport . The 33-minute low-budget airport is still considered the first German lesbian porn and a milestone in pornographic film history .

After freelance work as a journalist, author and presenter, she worked from 1996 to 2005 as editor-in-chief of Berlin's queer city magazine Siegessäule . She was instrumental in the development process of the magazine from a gay magazine to gay-lesbian and finally queer content. In 2003 she designed the lesbian magazine L-MAG and initially led the editor-in-chief together with Peter Polzer.

From 1995 to 2005 she was an employee of the Berlin International Film Festival in the Panorama section and the "queer" film prize Teddy Award . In other film festivals in Europe (z. B. in Kiev , Turin , Bilbao , Barcelona , Bern , Lisbon , Prague ) and at international film festivals (such as Montevideo , Tel Aviv and several in the United States ) it sits again in the jury and holds lectures.

Together with Wolfgang Theis and Maria Schmidt, she curated the exhibition “Nobody is perfect - film idols of lesbians and gays ” (January 20, 1999 - April 11, 1999) in the Schwules Museum * Berlin and gave various tours through the exhibition.

Kay also translated the English edition of the fan book for the popular lesbian TV series The L Word - When Women Love Women - into German in 2006 .

Since 2007 she has been co-organizer and curator of the PornFilmFestival Berlin .

In 2012 the now deceased publisher of Siegessäule and L-MAG , Reiner Jackwerth, discontinued the publishing operations of Jackwerth Verlag and sold the media. Manuela Kay and her long-time colleague Gudrun Fertig then founded Special Media SDL GmbH in 2012 and took over the magazines SIEGESSÄULE, L-MAG and DU & ICH from Jackwerth Verlag. Kay thus became, together with Ready, the managing majority shareholder and at the same time the publisher of the magazines listed .

Kay's main journalistic topics are lesbian culture, sexuality , film and international topics.

Sociopolitical engagement

Manuela Kay sees herself as a radical feminist and is committed to lesbian visibility, feminism and LGBT rights in general.

On the occasion of the 10th anniversary of L-MAG 2013, Kay fulfilled a long-cherished dream and initiated the Dyke * March Berlin based on the US model. In the meantime, Cologne (since 2015), Hamburg (from 2016) and 2017 followed the Dyke * March Rhein-Neckar in Heidelberg with the demo on the evening before the CSD for lesbian visibility.
