Out in the cinema

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Out im Kino is a standard reference work on lesbian and gay filmmaking by Axel Schock and Manuela Kay . The first edition was published in 2003 by the Berliner Querverlag .

The lexicon lists around 1000 feature and documentary films from the beginnings of cinema up to 2003 with detailed contents and an index of names, titles and topics. Short and TV films were avoided. All full-length productions that had found a German distributor and thus regularly found their way into the cinemas by the editorial deadline are critically presented.

" Although lesbian and gay-relevant films have been produced around the world, especially since the 1990s, only about half of them find their way into our cinemas - and thus into this lexicon, " the authors explain in the foreword. Exceptions were only made where the individual film was so important that the restrictive criteria were exceptionally disregarded.

Out in the cinema is the only reference work of its kind in Europe to date.

Axel Schock gives lectures with film examples on the history of lesbian-gay cinema under the same title, for example at the Turin International Gay & Lesbian Film Festival, Mardi Gras Film Festival Sydney /, Lesbian-gay Film Days Hamburg , Festival lezbinega in gejevskega filma Ljubljana, Pinkapple Zurich, Kino International Berlin and Queer Film Festival Bremen.

Reviews

“The range is wide: homophobic works such as" Anders als du und ich "(1957) by Nazi propagandist Veit Harlan , radical political statements from the gay movement, some outrageous soft porn and many beautiful, intelligent films are listed. In between, of course, there is also some well-intentioned and sensationalism - here, lesbians and gays are exploited as decorative elements or are intended to signal progressiveness, which, however, degenerates into pseudo-tolerance. “Everything that is not heterosexual and has so far been accessible to a German audience in the cinema has found its way into this sophisticated film lexicon, richly equipped with photographs: 335 men in fumbling, 10 cruel prison guards, kissing scenes that would have failed in Hollywood, 7 lesbian ones Maid and a gay dog, as the editors Manuela Kay and Axel Schock remark in a good mood. Review of lectures by Axel Schock:

“With their lesbian-gay film lexicon 'Out im Kino', Manuela Kay and Axel Schock have created a reference work that is unique in Europe. The entertaining lecture begins with the first appearance of a lesbian in the film, continues to the first gay or lesbian bar that has ever been shown in the film, through to German films and new trends from Hollywood. Curious, homophobic, dramatic and historical are shown. Of course, always - according to the medium of film - getting under your skin and sensual! "
