Lindsay Marie Whalen (born May 9, 1982 in Hutchinson , Minnesota ) is a former American basketball player . Until 2018, she played for the Minnesota Lynx in the Women's National Basketball Association . The 1.75 meter tall whale was mainly used in the position of the point guard . She now looks after the women's team at the local university.
Career
college
In college, Whalen played for the University of Minnesota team . In 2004, she led the Minnesota Golden Gophers for the only time to date in the round of the best four university teams in the country.
WNBA (since 2004)
After several awards during her high school and college days , Whalen was selected fourth in the Draft by the Connecticut Sun in the 2004 WNBA Draft . For the Sun team she played a total of five seasons in the WNBA. She was almost always part of the team's starting lineup and reached the finals twice in her first two WNBA seasons. In 2004 these were lost to the Seattle Storm team and in 2005 to the Sacramento Monarchs . On January 12, 2010, she was transferred to the Minnesota Lynx . With the team from her home state, she reached the WNBA finals six times and won the WNBA championship title four times in 2011 , 2013 , 2015 and 2017 . Whalen was a regular among the best assist givers in the league and was named best in the league three times. With a total of four titles and eight finals, Whalen is one of the most successful players in the WNBA. In 2018 Whalen announced the end of her professional career in the WNBA.
Up to this point, Whalen had played 480 games in 15 WNBA seasons in the regular season, starting 476 times and scoring 5523 points, 1459 rebounds and 1813 assists. In 82 playoff games (including 82 in the starting lineup) she scored 953 points, 214 rebounds and 278 assists.
Europe
During the WNBA season break, Lindsay Whalen plays like many WNBA players in Europe. She was on the field for teams from Russia, the Czech Republic and Turkey. Most recently she played for Agü Spor Kayseri's Turkish team in the 2014/15 season .
National team
Whalen is also very successful in the US national team . She won the gold medal at the London 2012 Olympics and the Rio 2016 Olympics . In addition, she was with the US team in 2010 and 2014 the basketball world championship. At the beginning of her career, she also won the title at the 2003 Junior World Championship.
Trainer
Whalen has been with her former university since 2018, which coaches the women's basketball team of the Minnesota Golden Gophers
