The 2004 draft
In September 2003, Gund announced that his company wanted to withdraw from the WNBA business. Since no new owner could be found for the team, the Cleveland Rockers had to stop their game operations, which is why the players could be drafted in a dispersal draft by the other teams in the league on January 6th .
The WNBA Draft took place on April 17, 2004 at NBA Entertainment Studios in Secaucus , New Jersey , United States . The Mercury's first pick was Diana Taurasi from the United States . Washington then picked Alana Beard in second place , followed by Nicole Powell in third place. In total, the 13 franchises secured the rights to 38 players. The United States made up the majority with over three quarters of all female players.
