The WNBA Draft 2012 was the 16th talent draw of the Women's National Basketball Association and took place on April 16, 2012 at ESPN Studios in Bristol , Connecticut, USA . The first round of the draft was broadcast nationwide on ESPN2. The second and third rounds were shown on NBA TV and ESPNU.
With the First Overall Draft Pick, the Los Angeles Sparks chose the American MaNneka Ogwumike . Two more American women were selected in second and third place with Shekinna Stricklen ( Seattle Storm ) and Devereaux Peters ( Minnesota Lynx ). A total of 36 players from five nations were selected from the WNBA franchises in three rounds. The only European players selected were Farhiya Abdi (Los Angeles Sparks) from Sweden in 13th and Nika Barič from Slovenia (Minnesota Lynx) in 20th place.
Draft order
The draft order was determined by the draft lottery on November 10, 2011 after the end of the 2011 season . The four teams that did not qualify for the play-offs in the 2011 season took part; or their right to vote holder. The worst team in the regular season had a 44.2 percent chance of winning the lottery; the best of the four teams not qualified for the playoffs had a 10.4 percent chance.
The Minnesota Lynx won the lottery and moved up from second to first place in the draft order. The Tulsa Shock , the worst team of the regular season, slipped to second place in the draft order despite the highest chance of victory.
The draft order of the eight play-off participants was set based on their table status in the regular season. The rule was that the team with the fewest wins was in fifth place. The draft order determined by the lottery was only significant for the first round. The draft order of the second and third round was determined purely on the basis of the table status in the regular season. However, the teams had the opportunity to acquire voting rights from other teams via transfers or to give their own to other teams.
