Swintayla Marie Cash (born September 22, 1979 in McKeesport , Pennsylvania , United States ) is a professional basketball player. She last played in the 2016 season for the New York Liberty in the Women's National Basketball Association .

After winning titles while in college, Cash was selected second in the Draft by the Detroit Shock in the 2002 WNBA Draft . In her second WNBA season , she won her first championship title with the Shock. Further titles followed in 2006 with the Shock and 2010 with the Seattle Storm .

Cash was inducted into the Women's Basketball Hall of Fame as a player in 2020 .

Career

High school

In her youth, Cash attended McKeesport Area High School in McKeesport , Pennsylvania and played for their high school basketball team.

College (1998 to 2002)

Cash studied at the University of Connecticut from 1998 to 2002 , graduating with a degree in communications. During this time she also played for the university's women's basketball team, the Huskies. In total, Cash completed four seasons for the Huskies, with which she won the National Collegiate Athletic Association championships in 2000 and 2002 . When he won the NCAA Division I Basketball Championship in 2002, Cash won all season games with the Huskies.

Club basketball

WNBA (since 2002)

Swin Cash was drawn second in the 2002 WNBA Draft by the Detroit Shock . In the 2003 season she was able to win the WNBA championship for the first time with the Shock. She was also called up for the first time in the Eastern All-Star Team. In the 2006 season she was able to win the WNBA championship for the second time with Detroit. Since it came at the end of her time at Detroit again and again to arguments with the Shock head coach Bill Laimbeer , she was transferred to the Seattle Storm on February 19, 2008 for a draft pick.

During her time in Seattle, she was able to achieve further success, so in 2010 she won her third WNBA championship. In addition, she was voted into the starting line-up of the All-Star Games in 2009 and 2011 by the fans. In both games she was voted Most Valuable Player of the All-Star Games. In her final season for the Storm, she was elected to the WNBA All-Defensive Second Team . On January 2, 2012, she was transferred to the Chicago Sky in exchange for a first-round pick in the 2012 WNBA Draft and Le'coe Willingham .

In the 2012 and 2013 seasons , she was in the roster of Sky. During this time, she was in the starting line-up in all 68 games and in 2014 she played her part in the team's first entry into the playoffs.

At the beginning of the 2014 season she was part of the Atlanta Dream team . During the season she moved to the New York Liberty , for which she also played in the 2015 and 2016 seasons. There she met her former head coach Bill Laimbeer again. After the Liberty could not qualify for the playoff in 2014, Cash failed with the team in 2015 and 2016 in the second playoff round.

After the 2016 season , she did not play in the WNBA. Up to this point, she played in 15 WNBA seasons in the regular season 479 games, she was 432 times in the starting lineup and scored 5119 points, 2521 rebounds and 1133 assists. In 56 playoff games (53 of them in the starting line-up) she scored 556 points, 272 rebounds and 138 assists.

International

Cash also played for various clubs in Europe during the WNBA season breaks, such as for the Russian team VBM-SGAU Samara in the 2003/04 season . She also played for the ZVVZ USK Prague in the 2008/09 season .

National team

Cash won the gold medal with the US women's basketball team at the 2004 Olympic Games in Athens . She was able to repeat this success with the US team in London in 2012 . At the basketball world championship in 2010 she won the gold medal with the national team. The Americans won all nine games. She also won the gold medal with the US team at the 2007 American Championships.
