The eleventh WNBA Draft was held on April 4, 2007 at the Renaissance Hotels in Cleveland , Ohio , United States . The 13 WNBA teams had the chance to secure the rights to the most promising talents. Each team was allowed to choose one player per round.
The 2007 draft
On October 26, 2006, the selection order for a lottery was determined. They surprisingly won the Phoenix Mercury ahead of the San Antonio Silver Stars and the Chicago Sky . This was the first time that the team with the smallest chance of the first pick received it.
On January 3, 2007, the owners of the Charlotte Sting announced that they no longer wanted to fund the team. The WNBA did not find an owner for the team, which is why the players could be drafted by the other teams in the league in a dispersal draft on January 8th .
The WNBA Draft took place on April 4, 2007 at the Renaissance Hotels in Cleveland , Ohio , United States. As a first pick, the Mercury drew the American Lindsey Harding . After that, San Antonio picked Jessica Davenport in second place , followed by Armintie Price in third place. In total, the 13 franchises secured the rights to 39 players. The United States made up the majority with over three quarters of all female players. On the same day of the draft, Lindsey Harding was transferred to Minnesota for Tangela Smith . In addition, Jessica Davenport was transferred to New York for Becky Hammon and a second-round draft pick in the 2008 WNBA Draft on the same day, including a first-round draft pick in the 2008 WNBA draft.
Dispersal Draft
The Sting players Tasha Butts and Summer Erb could not be selected by the other teams because their contract expired this season.
