Rebecca Lynn "Becky" Hammon ( Russian Ребекка Линн "Бэкки" Хаммон / Rebekka Linn "Bekki" Chammon; born March 11, 1977 in Rapid City , South Dakota , United States ) is a former American- Russian basketball player. She played eight years each for New York Liberty and the San Antonio Silver Stars in the Women's National Basketball Association .
Career
college
Becky Hammon played for the women's basketball team at Colorado State University until 1999 . On November 12, 2004, Hammon was inducted into the Colorado State University Hall of Fame. As of January 22, 2005, Hammon's jersey number 25 is no longer awarded at Colorado State University.
WNBA (1999-2014)
Despite her impressive performance in college, she was never selected by a WNBA team in a WNBA draft . On May 12, 1999, they took the New York Liberty under contract, where she was initially only the substitute player for Teresa Weatherspoon . But when they moved to the Los Angeles Sparks for the 2004 season, Hammon took their place in the starting lineup. In their first season in the starting lineup, Hammon led the Liberty to the Eastern Conference Finals, where they failed with the Liberty but to the Connecticut Sun.
On the occasion of the WNBA Draft 2007 Hammon and a second-round pick in the WNBA Draft 2008 were transferred to the San Antonio Silver Stars for a first-round pick (2nd overall pick: Jessica Davenport ) in the WNBA Draft 2007. In the 2007 season she played her strongest season to date. She averaged 18.8 points and 5 assists per game. Because she had the best assist cut in the entire league, she was honored with a WNBA Peak Performer Award . Hammon won 20 of a total of 34 games with the Silver Stars and made it into the playoffs for the first time in team history, where they only failed in the Conference Finals at the later WNBA champions Phoenix Mercury . Since she exploits important litters in crucial moments, she was nicknamed "Big Shot Becky" by the fans.
In July 2013, Hammon tore a cruciate ligament in his left knee and was sidelined for the rest of the season. The following year she announced her retirement at the end of the season. At the San Antonio Spurs , Hammon will subsequently become the first woman with a full-time contract on the coaching staff of an NBA club.
Up to this point she played in 16 WNBA seasons in the regular season 450 games, while she was 329 May in the starting lineup and scored 5841 points, 1111 rebounds and 1708 assists. In 60 playoff games (40 of them in the starting line-up) she scored 722 points, 122 rebounds and 173 assists. She was voted one of the WNBA's Top 15 Players of All Time for her achievements in the WNBA for the league's 15th anniversary in 2011 .
Europe
Like many WNBA players, Nolan plays regularly in Europe during the WNBA season break. Since 2006 she has been on the field for teams from Spain and Russia. Most recently she played for the Russian team Sparta & K Widnoje .
National team
Hammon was not considered for the United States basketball team in 2008, despite her strong performances . Since Hammon played for CSKA Moscow during the WNBA season break, she has had both US citizenship and Russian citizenship since 2008. Therefore, she took part in the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing for the Russian basketball team. Here Hammon's team won the bronze medal. Four years later she took part in the Olympic Games again, finishing fourth with Russia.
