The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill (also called UNC , UNC-Chapel Hill , UNC-CH , North Carolina or simply Carolina ) is a state, research-oriented university in Chapel Hill in the US state of North Carolina . It is the best known location of the system of the University of North Carolina and with approximately 30,000 students the second largest university in North Carolina. The university is considered one of the original eight Public Ivys . It is one of the best universities in the USA and is also a member of the Association of American Universities , an association of leading US research universities that has existed since 1900.

history

The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill was founded as the University of North Carolina on December 11, 1789 , with first students enrolled on February 12, 1795. This makes it one of the three oldest universities in the United States. It was originally called "North Carolina University" and was only given its current name in 1963. Under Chancellor Kemp Plummer Battle, the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill became a cross-gender university in 1877, at which both women and men can study. Afro-Americans were banned from studying at the UNC-CH until 1951. For research and treatment purposes, the university opened its own hospital in 1952 under the name "UNC Health Care", which has specialized in a center for cancer research since it was founded. Usenet was launched in 1979 as a link between two Unix computers at the University of North Carolina and Duke University .

Today the university offers degrees in more than 70 subjects and comprises 15 colleges including the "College of Arts and Sciences". The campus covers approximately 3 km ² and is located in the center of the university town of Chapel Hill . The students are organized into over 550 officially recognized student groups. The student newspaper The Daily Tar Heel has won several national awards and the university's own radio station became the world's first station to be broadcast over the Internet. With more than 285,000 alumni living, the UNC's alumni network is one of the largest and most active in the United States. The university's students, alumni and sports teams are known as “tar heels”.

Landmark

One of the university's landmarks is Old Well , a neo-classical rotunda that was built on the site of the old well house. Old Well is at the south end of McCorcle Place, one of the campus' large lawns, between the Old East Dormitory and the Old West Dormitory. There is still a drinking fountain in the middle of the Old Well, but it is now connected to the city's water supply. Legend has it that freshmen who drink there on the first day of their studies will complete the next four years with excellent results.

Another landmark is the Davie poplar , a tulip tree estimated to be 300 to 375 years old. Again, a legend has it that the university will bloom and prosper as long as the tree exists. Based on this legend, the tree is now filled with concrete and connected to the surrounding trees with steel cables.

Since the end of the 19th century, the so-called "Carolina Blue" (also "Tar Heel Blue") and white have been the official colors for the coat of arms and sports teams of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.

The university is a member of the Atlantic Coast Conference . The rivalry with the teams of Duke University is famous . The basketball team is particularly well known. As students, the later NBA stars Mitch Kupchak , Michael Jordan , Jerry Stackhouse , Antawn Jamison , Rasheed Wallace and Vince Carter played for the tar heels . UNC is one of the few universities in the US where handball is played. From 2004 to 2006, the men's team was able to win the US college championships. In 2011 , the UNC footballers won both the regular season and the postseason in college soccer at ACC .
