Mitchell Kupchak (born May 24, 1954 in Hicksville , New York ) is a former American basketball player and current general manager of the Charlotte Hornets .

NBA career

Kupchak participated as an amateur player in the 1976 Olympic Games in Montreal and won the gold medal. In the 1976 NBA draft , he was then selected in 13th place by the Washington Bullets . After his election to the NBA All-Rookie Team in 1977, he won his first championship as a player with the Bullets in 1978. In 1981 he moved to the Los Angeles Lakers , where he became a teammate of Magic Johnson and Kareem Abdul-Jabbar . In 1982 and 1985 he won two more championships with the Lakers in the role of high-class reservist.

Managerial career

After his resignation in 1986, Kupchak was initially assistant manager under Jerry West at the Lakers. In 2000 he succeeded West as general manager of the Lakers. He also won the championship as a manager in 2001, 2002, 2003, 2009 and 2010. He was responsible for the engagements of Gary Payton and Karl Malone in the summer of 2003 and Pau Gasol in 2008. He was relieved of his duties with the President of Public Relations on February 21, 2017 as part of a realignment of the franchise. On April 8, Kupchak, who had played like Jordan at the University of North Carolina under Dean Smith and was elected All-American , was appointed General Manager of the Charlotte Hornets.
