Janel McCarville (born November 3, 1982 in Stevens Point , Wisconsin , United States ) is a professional basketball player. She currently plays for the Minnesota Lynx in the Women's National Basketball Association .

Career

college

Janel McCarville played for the Golden Gophers, the University of Minnesota women's basketball team, until 2005 . In the four years for the Gophers she was always in the starting line-up. In 2004 she and Lindsay Whalen led the Gophers to the Final Four of the NCAA Division I Basketball Championship .

Women's National Basketball Association

Janel McCarville was selected first in the 2005 WNBA Draft by the Charlotte Sting . McCarville played two seasons for the Sting but failed to live up to expectations in either season as a first draft pick. After the Sting had closed their game operations after the 2006 season , they were selected in the Dispersal Draft by the New York Liberty . In New York she was finally able to follow up on her college performance. McCarville ended the 2007 season with a points average of 10.4 points per game. For this increase in performance in the preseason she was voted WNBA Most Improved Player at the end of the season . Also in the years 2008 to 2010 she was part of the base line-up of Liberty. Although she was tied to the New York team in the 2011 and 2012 seasons , she did not play a game in the league. Before the 2013 season, McCarville moved to the Minnesota Lynx as part of a trade , with whom they won the WNBA championship straight away. After she continued to be part of the starting line-up of the Lynx in 2014 , she waived the 2015 season for health reasons . After her return in 2016 , however, she was only a supplementary player for the team from Minnesota.

Europe

For several years she was also active for clubs in Europe.
