Founded in 1974 in the USA , Foot Locker is an international retail chain of shops in the sports sector and has been the successor company to the retail chain Woolworth , headquartered in New York City, since 2001 .
As of 2013, the company includes the retail chain Foot Locker (almost 2,000 stores in 21 countries) and the sub-brands Lady Foot Locker (over 400 stores in the USA) and Kids Foot Locker (over 300 stores in the USA) as well as the retail chains Footaction USA (over 300 stores in the USA), Champs Sports (over 550 stores in the USA and Canada), Eastbay (online shop in the USA) and CCS (online shop for skaters with two shops). Mainly trainers , sneakers and sports clothing, especially from selected trend brands, are sold.

In 1963, Woolworth bought Kinney Shoes Corporation, founded in New York City in 1894, which, as a subsidiary of Woolworth, initially operated sports shoe stores in California under the Foot Locker brand from 1974 . In 1998 the Woolworth Corporation changed its name to Venator Group, Inc. In 2001 the Venator Group changed its name to Foot Locker, Inc.
The first Foot Locker stores opened in 1974. In 2013, Runners Point was taken over . As of February 3, 2018, Foot Locker had 3,310 stores in the United States, Canada , Europe , Asia, and Australia . On May 19, 2020, Foot Locker announced the closure of its subsidiary Runners Point.
