Coroatá , officially Portuguese Município de Coroatá , is a municipality in the state of Maranhão in Brazil . In the 2010 census year, 61,725 Coroataens lived here. As of July 1, 2019, the population was estimated at 65,296 inhabitants, who live in a community area of around 2263.7 km². The calculated population density in 2010 was 27 people per km², but around 70% of the population concentrated on the urban core located directly on the Rio Itapecuru . It ranks 19th out of 217 municipalities in the state. The capital São Luís is 260 km away.
It is the bishopric of the Catholic diocese Coroatá with its diocesan cathedral Catedral Nossa Senhora da Piedade . The Universidade Estadual do Maranhão has a campus for higher education, the Instituto Estadual de Educação, Ciência e Tecnologia do Maranhão (IEMA) a secondary technical school.
history
The Portuguese colonial rulers first settled the area, followed by residents of the area. The farmers used the place as a transshipment depot, travelers who came to the area via the Rio Mearim could get supplies here. Syrian and Lebanese immigrants ensured trade and continued growth. The territory was initially under the municipality of Caxias , the settlement center was called Coroatá-Grande and was located on the banks of the Igarapé Grande , a tributary of the Rio Itapecuru, now in a suburban zone. The later, today's city center was built on the opposite, left bank of the Rio Itapecuru. The place name is derived from an indigenous plant name.
The place had a privileged location due to the Itapecuru as a transport route, and in the early 20th century the Ferrovia São Luís – Teresina railway line , which connected its own capital with those of Piauí, Teresina , and Ceará , Fortaleza , brought important factors for the Development of the community. On November 5, 1843, the Provincial Law Lei n ° 173 raised the settlement to Vila Coroatá . On April 8, 1920, the lei n ° 924 was awarded the city charter and Coroatá was spun off from Caxias.

The place Coroatá is at an altitude of 35 meters above sea level. The biome is the Brazilian cerrado . The greater part is on the left side of the Rio Itapecuru. Road connection is via the MA-020 and MA-235 .
Surrounding communities are Timbiras , Codó , Peritoró , Alto Alegre do Maranhão , São Mateus do Maranhão , Pirapemas and Vargem Grande .

The community has a tropical climate, Aw according to the Köppen and Geiger climate classification . The average temperature is 27.4 ° C. The average rainfall is 1332 mm per year. The southern summer has higher rainfall than the southern winter.

Local government
The executive rests with the city prefect (mayor). In the local elections in 2016 , Luís Mendes Ferreira Filho des Partido dos Trabalhadores (PT) was elected city prefect for the term from 2017 to 2020.
The legislature rests with a 15-member elected city council, the vereadores of the Câmara Municipal.

The monthly average income in 2017 was 1.7 times the Brazilian minimum wage ( Salário mínimo ) of R $ 880.00 (income converted for 2019: around € 338 per month). The Human Development Index (HDI) is rated as average at 0.576 for 2010. In 2017, 3,934 people or 6.1% of the population were registered as permanent employees; 53.3% of the population had an income of half the minimum wage in 2010. More than 9500 families received support from the Bolsa Família social program in October 2019 .
