Buriticupu , officially Portuguese Município de Buriticupu , is a Brazilian municipality in the state of Maranhão . The population was estimated as of July 1, 2019 at 72,358 inhabitants, who live on a municipality area of ​​around 2544.9 km² and are called Buriticupuenses ( buriticupuenses ). It ranks 16th out of 217 municipalities in the state. The calculated population density is 25.6 people per km². The distance to the capital São Luís is 395 km.

It is nicknamed the City of Wood .
