Barra do Corda , officially Portuguese Município de Barra do Corda , is a municipality in the Brazilian state of Maranhão . The population was estimated as of July 1, 2019 at 88,212 inhabitants, who live on a community area of around 5190.3 km² and are called Barra-Cordenses ( barra-cordenses ). It ranks 11th out of 257 municipalities in the state. The calculated population density is around 16 people per km², in fact over 60% live in the urban area of the eponymous city. The capital São Luís is 462 km away.
Barra do Corda is the seat of the planning region Região de Planejamento dos Guajajaras , which consists of three municipalities and is named after the indigenous Guajajaras living in the center of the country .
The Universidade Estadual do Maranhão maintains the Centro de Estudos Superiores de Barra do Corda (CESBAC) branch in Barra do Corda .

Surrounding communities are Formosa da Serra Negra , Tuntum , Grajaú , Jenipapo dos Vieiras , Fernando Falcão , Joselândia , São Roberto , São Raimundo do Doca Bezerra and Itaipava do Grajaú .
The community has a tropical climate, Aw according to the Köppen and Geiger climate classification . The average temperature is 26.9 ° C. The average rainfall is 1144 mm per year. In the southern summer there is significantly more rainfall in Barra do Corda than in the southern winter.
The Rio Corda and Rio Mearim rivers converge in the municipality.
Local government
The executive rests with the city prefect (mayor). In the local elections in 2016 , Wellryk Oliveira Costa da Silva, called Eric Costa, was elected city prefect by the communist PCdoB for the term from 2017 to 2020. The legislature lies with an elected city council of 11 ( vereadores ).
